Earlier this year a talented gentlemen by the name of Peter Hylenski contacted me for a re-brand of his studio. He runs a sound design studio that is hi tech, yet very artistic and musical. He combines the engineering side of recording and sound system design with the artistic side of making music.

First off, I’m going to show you right off the old that was used on the old letterheads as well as new logo.

The Process

We went through a fairly long process before getting something we both felt 100% about it.

The creative started with filling several pages of my sketchpad. I found it a challenge coming up with an original concept that was original and non-cliche. After some hard work I developed some concepts I felt were strong enough to present to the client.

Ideas along the way:

I was inspired by this sound waves photo during the research process to to create a hummingbird made out of sound waves.

I felt the hummingbird suggested an artistic touch and sound design. Client passed on this concept.

Also tried a monogram consisting of volume controls. He liked the technical side of the logo but we passed on this concept as well. It was probably too abstract.

The Chosen Concept

The initial sketch that I had developed on the sketchpad was a music note suggesting a “p” with the sound waves coming off of it forming an “h” ended up being very close to what was chosen in the final.

Original concept that was developed and presented to the client.

The client was most positive about this concept initially. I think overall he felt it was too sterile though and not artistic enough. I agreed with him on this point and moved onto the next iteration where I went with a more classic look.

2nd iteration:

The client didn’t connect really well with this concept though. We both took time to reflect on the design for a while and the client sent me some sketches he worked off my initial concept. I combined our ideas to come up with a concept that ended up being the final after some minor refinement/revisions.

We were both very pleased at the outcome and feel it is a strong identity for his brand.

Time to get back to work. Hope you were able to find something of interest out of what was shared.

I always love hearing from you all.

Best,
